At the beginning of the 19th century, construction began on the Nantes-Brest Canal, which stretches for 360 kilometers across Brittany. Along this canalized waterway are 237 locks, each with its own lock house. These "lock houses" were inhabited by lock keepers who maintained the canal sections. They also served as relay points for horse-drawn transport. You can now rent lock house no. 216, "Le Moustoir," in Châteauneuf-du-Faou, located in the heart of the Finistère department.
