Description

La Bégude des AlpillesThis charming and quirky guesthouse offers a peaceful retreat for discerning travelers, a stopover for cyclists, and a distinctive base for mountaineers in the ancient village of Orgon, between Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. Enjoy restful nights in a generously sized room in a stone townhouse in the heart of the village, and savor a breakfast that will keep you energized all day. Private bathroom. Single stays are also welcome. Feeling lethargic? Cycle up Mont Ventoux in the morning, lose yourself in the perched villages of the Luberon in search of an aperitif, and then spend the afternoon climbing the nearby Alpilles cliffs! Hosting On the first floor, a spacious (23 m²) bedroom with a high ceiling features two single beds (comfortable mattresses, choice of pillows) that can be joined to form a double bed. Soak your weary bones in the large, modern en-suite bathroom (large window, double marble sink, corner bathtub, toilet). Guests have access to the dining/reception room on the ground floor. Bicycle storage is available in the cellar. The second floor is reserved for the owners, who live on-site. This is a three-story medieval stone townhouse in the heart of a historic village at the foot of the Alpilles mountains. We don't have a garden, let alone a swimming pool. But we do have everything you need for a peaceful and comfortable night's sleep, as well as all the ingredients for a hearty breakfast to start the next day! Breakfast Freshly squeezed orange juice, tea/coffee/hot chocolate; baguettes, croissants, butter, jams, honey, etc. This is a hearty breakfast and can be served at any time with a choice of two options, subject to prior arrangement the evening before: • Standard breakfast (included in the fixed price): selection of cheeses and cold cuts; • Full English breakfast (supplement of €6 per person): 2 fried eggs, fried tomatoes, sausages, bacon, and broad beans. Special requests will be gladly accommodated! Surroundings • Supermarket: 700 m • Fruit and vegetable stand with adjacent bakery: 350 m • Delicious restaurant: 270 m • Internationally renowned climbing site, 70 m high: 2 km • Swimming and water skiing: 1,5 km (village gravel beach surrounded by cliffs and woods) • Swimming pool: 7 km (in Cavaillon) • Massage and beauty salon: 300 m • Tennis courts: 500 m • Hiking trails: 500 m • Dedicated cycle paths: two converted railway lines very close by. One starts 4 km away and is 12 km long. The other (EuroVelo 8) starts 8 km away and is 40 km long. Several others extend further, covering hundreds of kilometers. • Easy and challenging cycling loops (e.g., "Alpilles-Roquemartine," or up to Mont Ventoux), and mountain biking trails • Bike rental: 7 km, in Cavaillon • Horse riding: 9 km, on the outskirts of Orgon • Golf: 23 km in Morières and two others (Maussane-les-Alpilles and Pont Royal) within 28 km • Coastline: 60 km, Bay of Marseille with sandy beaches • Spa: 13 km in Eygières • Wine and olive oil tasting: 4,5 km (Valdition), and countless others. Find yourself nestled directly beneath the cliffs, at the eastern end of the limestone Alpilles range and the Durance River, where villagers once levied tolls on passersby. Admire the right bank of the river and the imposing Luberon massif, and further on, the Vaucluse, crowned by Mont Ventoux. The house is located within the town walls, very close by The Sainte-Anne gate, through which Napoleon passed in 1814, is a notable feature of the building, distinguished by its many hanging plants on the façade, 30 meters downstream from the gate, to the left. Orgon, founded in the Middle Ages, boasts a monastery perched on the cliffs of the Alpilles mountains, the ruined castle of the Duke of Guise, and a magnificent church overlooking the town square. The town is an ideal base for outdoor activities, and we would be delighted to offer advice. Just outside the town is an internationally renowned climbing site, as well as a former gravel pit transformed into a leisure area with cable water skiing. Transport It may be a small town with a village feel, but it still has its own train station, with about six daily services to Marseille and Avignon. If you need to bring a car, it's best to park just outside the town walls and then walk a few meters. If you arrive by bicycle, store them inside the house, either on the bike racks or tucked away in the rocky recesses within the house. Interaction with our guests We live on the second floor, leaving the rest of the house primarily for our clients' use. We prefer to keep our distance but would also be happy to chat with you!
