Description

From Switzerland to the Jura Mountains

The Pays de Gex greenway, linking Gex to Divonne-les-Bains, offers a bucolic ride ideal for the whole family. Nestled at the foot of the Jura mountains, this cycle path follows the route of a former railway line, offering a linear journey of several kilometers between nature and heritage.

Starting near the Gare restaurant in Gex, the route passes through several iconic towns in the Ain department, including Grilly and Divonne-les-Bains. The surface of the greenway varies throughout: stabilized gravel in shades of sand and gray on the first sections, before giving way to a paved road near Divonne. Mountain bikes, hybrid bikes, or e-bikes are recommended, while road bikes are less suitable.

Along the route, several sites are worth a stop. The Gex Firefighters Museum, the campsite bordering the cycle path, and the rural landscapes of Tutegny and Grilly offer pleasant breaks. Once in Divonne-les-Bains, cyclists can extend their exploration to Lake Divonne by following Rue de la Cité and Avenue des Alpes.

The Pays de Gex greenway is not limited to this route. It is part of a larger project aiming to connect Nyon, on the shores of Lake Geneva, to Saint-Genis-Pouilly. A future extension will thus strengthen cross-border cycling links.

Before setting off, it's advisable to consult the map of the Pays de Gex greenway to plan your route and anticipate the return journey, which is more demanding due to the slight elevation gain. Whether with family, on e-bikes, or mountain bikes, this ride promises an immersion in a preserved natural environment, between mountains and rolling plains.
