The Vélodyssée is a cycling route that crosses France from one end to the other, from Roscoff to Hendaye.
One section of this cycle route is the greenway between Rochefort and Marennes, which is part of EuroVelo 1. This section of the Vélodyssée is ideal for families who want to explore the region by bike. The greenway begins south of Rochefort, near the famous transporter bridge.
For nearly 4 kilometers, you can cycle safely along a bike path that runs alongside the Charente River to the Lapérouse marina in the heart of the city. This section of the route is very pleasant and offers beautiful views of the river. The cycle route then takes you from Rochefort to Cabariot via Tonnay-Charente, a distance of 13 kilometers. You'll follow a bike path that runs alongside the road, which is convenient and safe.
The greenway begins in Cabariot, east of Rochefort, and stretches for 15 kilometers to the Brouage marsh. This section of the route is particularly interesting as it follows a former railway line that crosses the Charente River and then runs alongside the Seudre-Charente Canal. The greenway's surface is compacted limestone, making it very pleasant to cycle. However, it should be noted that the greenway deteriorates after Hiers-Brouage, becoming an unpaved dirt track of approximately one kilometer. Caution is advised in this area, as the surface can be damaged, especially in wet weather.
Furthermore, agricultural vehicles may use this short section. Resurfacing work is carried out annually by the Department at the end of June or beginning of July. Upon arriving in Marennes, be aware of the busy RD 728 road and the roundabout at the town entrance. It is best to be vigilant and obey the traffic laws in this area. To prepare for your trip on the greenway between Rochefort and Marennes, it is advisable to consult a map of the route. This will allow you to orient yourself and plan your journey according to your preferences and needs.
You can also find various accommodations available along the greenway, such as guesthouses, hotels, campsites, or bed and breakfasts. These options will offer you comfort and tranquility for a good night's rest after a day of cycling.
