The Via Allier greenway between Pont-du-Château and Vic-le-Comte invites you to discover the Auvergne region by bike, along a 27 km route that blends nature, heritage, and exceptional panoramas. This safe cycle path, completed at the end of 2023, offers an ideal setting for family outings, whether you're riding a traditional bike or an e-bike (electric-assist bicycle). It forms a stage and one of the few greenways of the Via Allier V70 cycle route (Lac de Naussac - Nevers), which currently unfolds primarily as shared paths. It's perfect for first-time cycling experiences near the Clermont-Ferrand metropolitan area, starting from Cournon d'Auvergne or at either end of the greenway.
Starting in Pont-du-Château immerses cyclists in the history of this former river port in the Clermont-Ferrand region, which was a bustling trading hub between the 16th and 19th centuries. Wood, wine, Volvic stone, and coal were all shipped to Paris. Leaving this historically significant stop, the route winds along the banks of the Allier River, alternating between bucolic landscapes and breathtaking views of the Puy-de-Dôme volcanoes, testaments to the volcanic heritage of the Auvergne region.
Along the way, don't miss the Val d'Allier Eco-center, where former gravel pits have been transformed into a biodiversity sanctuary. This protected site, perfect for a nature break, offers numerous opportunities for birdwatching and admiring river landscapes. Further on, the route reveals panoramic views of the Chaîne des Puys mountain range and passes through vineyards producing Côtes d'Auvergne AOC wines.
Arriving in Vic-le-Comte offers an immersion in remarkable architectural heritage. The Romanesque church of Saint-Pierre, a true treasure of the village, deserves a thorough visit before continuing the adventure.
