The Via Allier, a distinctive cycle route, crosses the Auvergne region for 455 km between Langogne/Lac de Naussac and Nevers, following the course of the Allier River, one of the last wild rivers in Europe. Ideal for families and cycling enthusiasts, this varied route combines accessibility and challenges, while offering spectacular scenery and exceptional heritage.
Starting from Nevers, where the Allier meets the Loire, the cycle route follows a gentle and rolling profile, perfect for beginners or for venturing out on an electric bike (e-bike). You will encounter the Bec d'Allier, junction point with the famous Loire by bikeoffering connections to the EuroVelo 6 towards the Atlantic or the Danube. Following the river, discover Moulins and its Museum of Illustration, before crossing the Saint-Pourçain vineyards and reaching Vichy, renowned spa resort and its heritage listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The second half of the route becomes more challenging. From Pont-du-Château onwards, volcanoes dominate the landscape. In Issoire and Brioude, enjoy cultural visits, notably to the Basilica of Saint-Julien. The Allier gorges, between Langeac and Langogne, are the highlight: steep cliffs, Romanesque churches, and villages perched on volcanic flows follow one another. Water sports enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy in this wilder section.
To plan your route, consult the Via Allier map. The numerous SNCF train stations along the route facilitate tailor-made excursions or access to the different sections.
Whether you are looking for serenity or challenges, the Via Allier promises a rejuvenating journey in the heart of Auvergne.
