The Vélodyssée: from Josselin to Peillac, a medieval immersion along the canal

Step of Josselin in Peillac, long 46 km, takes you along a superb stretch of The Velodyssey running alongside the Canal from Nantes to Brest. Between villages of character, preserved nature et bucolic rest stopsThis bike ride promises you a journey through time, in a setting that is both medieval, romantic and rustic.

Upon your departure, Josselin dazzles you with its impressive fortress perched above the Oust. A true Breton postcard, the Josselin Castle blends elegantly Gothic and Renaissance architectureand is well worth a visit. This historical gem marks the beginning of a journey rich in discoveries.

Leaving Josselin, you cycle along a towpath to the smooth surface, winding along the canal, in the shade of century-old trees. The Oust valley, with its gentle undulations and the wooded foothills of the Lanvaux moors, forms a peaceful and inspiring setting. Along the way, the Mauron–Questembert greenway crosses your route several times, and footbridges like the one at Saint-Laurent-sur-Oust allow for excursions to the surrounding villages.

At the halfway point, don't miss Malestroit, nicknamed "the pearl of the Oust". Classified Small Town of CharacterThis city charms visitors with its half-timbered houses, Its Gothic or Renaissance facades decorated with Gargoylesand its narrow streets steeped in history. A stop in Malestroit is also an opportunity to discover nautical pleasures: the site is popular for the canoe Kayak.

Families will appreciate a detour to Lizio, not far from the route, where Robert Coudray brought to life a unique universe: The Scrap Metal PoetThis open-air museum presents a poetic world ofautomata and recycled sculptures, in a decidedly magical spirit. Not far away, the village of La Chapelle-Caro proposes a fun 13 km cycle route, punctuated by stages on the theme of Dragoncombining heritage and surprises for young and old.

The journey remains smooth, except at the approach to Peillacwhere the surface becomes more uneven. Also be mindful of Roc-Saint-André bridge, or one change of shore is required, and to Malestroit, where the height under bridge may be surprising.

Finally, the locks along the canal are all... perfect spots for a break. Among them, the Guélin lock, near Saint-Martin-sur-Oust, is a peaceful, flowery haven, bordered by pines, oaks and chestnut trees.
